Vermont
joined the Union in 1791 after battling for their own independence.
Benning Wentworth, then Colonial governor of New Hampshire, granted
land to settlers in the Green Mountains, which he assumed fell
under his dominion. After a 15 year dispute between New York and
New Hampshire, in 1764, the King of England declared that Vermont
belonged to New York . Vermont would not hear of it. To retain
Vermont's independence, Ethan Allen founded the Green Mountain
Boys. In 1777, Vermont declared its independence from both Britain
and America. The Republic of Vermont retained its sovereignty,
minted its own coinage, ran its own postal service, and corresponded
with Foreign Governments.
